More bagels from Bagels & Beans!! Dessert bagels! Apparently the Dutch like to put chocolate sprinkles on top of butter on top of bread? I am not complaining.

Bagels & Beans! We had an incredible spread! A bagel with goat cheese, honey, and walnuts (THE BEST), and a pastrami bagel (that Jessie can't wait to devour), and a bagel with turkey and avocado and pine nuts!! YUMMMM
Tea at Christopher Cook's flat! He made us so many delicious things to eat! A shortbread cake with walnuts and coffee icing, a Scottish fruitcake with whiskey, cucumber sandwiches, scones with homemade cream, and this delicious tiny biscotti creation…YUM.
Check out this restaurant near Notre Dame called Le Chat Qui PĂȘche! We got a three course meal for €12!! Food was not half bad! French onion soup, pork chop, and chocolate mousse pudding–yum!

SUNDAY 12.15
First full day in Amsterdam! Started the day at the Van Gogh museum! Still so strange to be able to take pictures in a museum. It never ceases to amaze me just how much Van Gogh painted. I love him. I got a t-shirt with his face on it…classy. Alarming moments when Jessie & I were separated and didn't know how to find each other again, but luckily we did. It's so weird to lose someone and not be able to just text them to ask where they are and meet up. How did people survive in ye olden days??
Wandered around before our bellies started to growl, and Jessie discovered what would become our home away from home in Amsterdam: BAGELS & BEANS. This cafe is AMAZING. My dream eatery, because I LOVE BAGELS. We shared this INCREDIBLE bagel with goat cheese and walnuts and honey. Like UNF.
After lunch we wandered through the city, through the Westerpark to get to the Westergasfabriek, this AWESOME Christmas market. At first we were pretty disappointed walking along the lame street stalls, but then we found the main market with all the food, and then we found the special indoor Christmas market which was AWESOME. So many samples of food, including this UNBELIEVABLY DELICIOUS Christmas bread, and all the stalls were so cool!! One of my favorite markets I've been to. Jessie & I got watches that double as snap bracelets! They are awesome. And I got these awesome ankle accessories for my boots that double as a necklace. Yessss.
Our next adventure was finding our way to this restaurant our friend Paul (who is also a staff member at BADA – he is very cool) recommended to us. The restaurant, Pllek, is in these old ship containers and it is very chic. But it is in the middle of no where!! We had to walk down this long creepy dark deserted pier to get to where the ferry was. This nice Dutch lady saw us struggling to read the ferry schedule and coached us through the process. The ferry is so cool! It's mostly used by bicyclists and motorists and a few pedestrians. It's free, you just scamper on and then it takes you across the water! Bizarre and awesome. After arriving on the other side (of the river??), we then walked down another dark street through a dark back street through a dark parking lot and FINALLY MADE IT ALIVE!! Pllek was worth it! The food was delicious! Silly Jessie dropped a mint into our decorative candle on the way out–girl is a trouble maker!
It was a little nerve-wracking wandering through some deserted streets to a bus stop, but eventually we got there and the bus came and we were safe and fine. Went back into the heart of the city to visit the street market and stop by a smoking cafe, Abraxas. I won't talk any more about that because my family reads this blog…
TUESDAY 12.17
Day Three in Amsterdam! We decided to check out the Rembrandt house, stopping for breakfast at (of course) Bagels & Beans along the way. Rembrandt seems like kind of a weirdo. He did pictures of people peeing and had a former mistress imprisoned?? Not really sure what the details are because our informative video did not think it was a big deal and moved on without any explanation. After the Rembrandt house we walked through the city on a mission to actually get some cake from Al Ponte. Made our way through the city, took the ferry, got to the cafe…and it was closing!! No!! Luckily the woman working there was very sweet and held off closing shop just long enough to sell us two slices of her lemon pound cake. And it was actually delicious!! She explained that her cafe gets no business in winter so she closes early…I really gotta go to Amsterdam during the warmer seasons!
We wandered through the city some more, but it was just so cold and we were running out of things to do so we actually ended up going to this tiny adorable cinema called The Movies to see Catching Fire. Luckily it was in English with Dutch subtitles! It was pretty darn good. I love Jennifer Lawrence! I mean, who doesn't?
Jessie then left for her plane to Edinburgh (she wanted an extra day in Scotland while I wanted an extra day in Amsterdam) and I headed back to the Meininger for an early night in. I LOVE the Meininger. Not only is it SO NICE, but booking a private room was an AWESOME decision because it was more like a hotel than anything else. I snuggled up in my bed, watched Anchorman, then went to sleep pretty early.
In the middle of the night, I woke up because someone was banging on my door. It was really scary, because there was absolutely no one who should have been banging on my door. Jessie was on a plane to Edinburgh, and I didn't know anyone else in Amsterdam. In my half-asleep daze, I heard someone call my name. I walked to the door, my heart pounding like a drum. Freaking out because there was no peephole and I didn't want to open the door and be killed, I wasn't sure what to do. but I finally mustered the courage and peeked out…no one was there. I headed back to bed, and right before I could crawl back under the covers, Jessie walked in! Turns out there was a mishap at the airport and she missed her flight. Poor thing, she had a very rough time trying to reschedule with easyJet, and the airline forced her to come back at 6:30am to rebook…yuck. It was all very upsetting for her and very disorienting for me. So she ended up staying with me until she could be rebooked to the very flight I was taking the next day. Rough stuff! A word to the wise: be VERY WARY of easyJet! They do not make it easy at all for their customers.
You can drink the water from the spring! It was warm and tasted like copper. Yum yum.
You get a strange feeling when you're about to leave a place. Like you'll not only miss the people you love but you'll miss the person you are now at this time and this place, because you'll never be this way ever again.
